Every Operating System ships with certain apps inside that offer different basic functionality. Most commonly, default apps are not what you wish to be using. Default apps often have limited functionality, and you may wish to change that to a more robust third-party alternative.
For instance, by default, after a clean installation, Microsoft sets its Edge browser as the default on Windows 10.
As a default browser, any link clicked on Windows will ultimately open in Edge whether you like it or not. But Edge – even the newest overhauled version based on Chromium – might not be everyone’s cup of tea.
And you may also not wish to use Groove Music as your default music player. In this guide, we’ll show you how to change default apps on Windows 10.
How to change default apps in Windows 10
1. Click the Windows Start Menu – the Windows logo on the bottom left side of your display or the dedicated keyboard key with a Windows logo baked on Windows laptops and PCs.
2. Open Settings
3. Click Apps

4. Select Default Apps on the left
5. Choose the app you wish to change under a category of your choice from the few provided.
Windows 10 allows users to change default apps in vast categories. The only app categories you can change default apps include Email, Maps, Music player, Photo viewer, Video player, and Web browser.
6. Select the app you wish to set as default.
It would help if you had the alternative already installed on your PC. In my case, I already have several third-party browsers installed, Mozilla Firefox and Google’s Chrome. (Check the bottom picture)
How to reset all default apps in Windows 10
Windows 10 also offers an easy way to revert to system defaults after you’ve made customized changes. The available reset button allows you to change default apps to built-in Windows 10 apps that Microsoft ships with every build.
Here’s how to reset defaults:
1. Click the Start Menu and select Settings
2. Go to Apps
3. Select Default Apps from the left
4. Click the Reset button
Once the reset is done(completes in an instant) default Windows 10 apps like Edge and Groove Music will be your go-to apps.
