The number of emails sent per day in the world keeps growing. For consumers, that means our inboxes are getting bombarded with tens if not hundreds of emails in a typical day. In 2017 alone, an estimated 269 billion emails were sent per day. It’s hard to keep up.

It’s no secret you can’t read all the emails in your Gmail. And neither are all emails worth reading. But that doesn’t mean you let your inbox get cluttered by unread emails. You can mark emails as read in Gmail even without opening them on PC, Mac, Android, and iOS.

Here’s how to:

Mark Emails as Read in Gmail on the Web

Step 1. Sign in to your Google account on your browser on Mac and Windows

Step 2. Go to the Gmail website

Step 3. Hover over an email you want to mark as read. You’ll see a row of icons on the right-hand side of the email.

Step 4. Tap the envelope button. This will make the email gray out from the rest of the read emails.

You can select multiple emails by tapping on the “Select” tool which appears on the left side of each email in Gmail. Tap on the Select tool on multiple emails to select several emails at once.

To select all emails in the current page, use the Select tool from the top toolbar in Gmail.

By default, this will select all emails visible from the current page.

To expand the coverage, tap on the “Select All Conversations” option available when you tap on the select checkmark in the top toolbar.

Next step, mark selected emails as read by clicking the open envope or “Mark as Unread” button(envelope icon) from the toolbar.

How to Mark Emails as Read in Gmail on Android and iOS

On Android and iOS, here’s how you can mark a single email or multiple emails as read without opening them.

Step 1. Open the Gmail app on your Android phone or iPhone

Step 2. Navigate to the section you want

Step 3. Tap the sender’s photo to select an email you wish to mark as read.

Step 4. Tap multiple photos to select multiple emails.

Step 4. Tap on the envelope button at the top toolbar to mark selected emails as read. All the selected emails will now be marked as read.

You can revert this change by tapping on the closed envelope icon at the top.
